One dispatch in the file is different from the rest: celebrating-20-years. It marks the season when the presenter could finally point backward, twenty campaigns announced, sold, and played in the same room, a run long enough to be its own news.
What the dispatch presented
An anniversary page did what no single season could: it made the presenter itself the story. Twenty years of seasons meant twenty springs of announcements, twenty falls of openings, and a file thick enough to prove the institution was older than most of its audience's subscriptions.
What the record kept
The page survives as an address and a title; the anniversary season it celebrated sits inside the normal run of season pages, which is exactly the point. The twentieth campaign was filed like the nineteen before it, because the work did not change when the number got round.
What the anniversary was for
A twenty-year mark told the town two things: the presenter had lasted, and it expected to last. Anniversaries are fundraising in a bow tie, the page gave donors, subscribers and the local paper a number to write about, and it gave the file a spine the shorter records could not.
What twenty years proved

What the celebration page also did, quietly, was argue for the twenty-first. An institution that can count to twenty is asking to keep counting, and the seasons filed after it, through 2017 and 2018 in the record, show the count continuing as if the anniversary were just another spring.
